Last weekend was certainly a busy one, with the two celebrations of First Holy Communion on Saturday and the celebration of Baptism within the 11:15 Mass on Sunday. It was a great way to continue our celebration of Easter, as we witnessed these beautiful Sacraments of Initiation. The celebration of Baptism within Mass is something the Church encourages so that “the entire community may be present and the necessary relationship between baptism and eucharist may be clearly seen”. We offer this as an option to the families when they schedule a baptism, and after the Easter Season, we will try to limit it to the first Sunday of the month, so that it will not be done too often. It will be up to the parents, and could be at any of our regular Masses. We will also try to put it in the bulletin the week before, so that you will know to expect it when you come to Mass. So many people commented positively, and were happy to be able to rejoice and celebrate with the family as we welcomed a new member into our Church and parish. I hope it also will be an incentive to all of us to try to live our faith in a stronger way.
Today we honor all mothers. Even though it is a “secular” celebration, I see the fact that it always comes in May, the month dedicated to Mary, as an affirmation that the Mother of God intercedes for all mothers. Whether you mom is still alive or has gone on to her eternal reward, I believe that our mother’s influence continues throughout our entire life. I know that I still find myself wanting to talk to my mom, especially when I have some news or an important decision to consider. While I cannot call her up and talk, I still talk to her and ask her to continue to intercede. Now that she sees God face to face, I believe that her prayers get quick results! If you still have your mom here, I hope you can appreciate the time you have together. No matter how rocky the relationship may be at times, she was the first one to love you and always will. I pray for all our mothers today and ask God to bless them for saying “yes” to the gift of life that God initiated through them. And to all the mothers in our parish, whether by blood, adoption or choice, thank you and God bless you. Happy Mother’s Day!!!
