As you enter the narthex of our Church, you will notice an image on long-term loan to us of Our Lady of Wilmington. This image of Our Lady, the original being a painting, was commissioned to celebrate the Diocese of Wilmington’s 150
th Anniversary.
The image and frame are inclusive of many meaningful elements that are deliberately included to speak to the viewer. Our Lady of Wilmington is emerging from a celestial blue background within the embrace of the architectural details of the Cathedral of St. Peter, our diocesan cathedral. On either side of where she stands, we see represented the state flowers, trees, and insects for Maryland and Delaware, each having significant meaning and symbolism in our faith as well. The upper regions of the image depict the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the Roth Bridge which spans the water way connecting the Eastern Shore with Delaware. Mary gestures in sign language, “Live Jesus” the motto of St. Francis de Sales, our diocesan patron saint.
May we always look to Mary and know through her cooperation with our Heavenly Father, that love conquers all thing, love never fails, and we are availed many graces through her intercession and care for the Church.
