The Easter Season continues, and all around us we see signs of new life. Nature itself brings forth shoots from the earth and buds on the trees. Spring flowers make their appearance and all signs point to life and growth. The same is true of a parish.
After welcoming adult converts to the faith at the Easter Vigil, we celebrate a large number of Baptisms, rejoicing with parents in the gift God has given them. First Holy Communions and Confirmations reflect the fullness of initiation into the Church, and it is always beautiful to see so many of our youth celebrating these sacraments.
It is also usual for a parish to conclude many programs that generally operate from September until May or June, taking a break over the summer. Transitions in leadership and membership occur, as seasonal parishioners return and various people decide to step aside and let others guide ministries and programs. All of this sometimes causes concern for a few, but I believe that it is a sign of growth for a parish.
As St. Christopher Parish moves forward in the effort to “Carry Christ Beyond the Pews”, everyone is needed to be a positive force for change, even while respecting our traditions. I know that God has great things in store for the parish, and I am confident that everyone here will continue to work hard to insure the His will is done and His Word proclaimed!
Tomorrow (Monday) is Memorial Day in our country, and it is important that we pause and honor all who made the ultimate sacrifice to insure that we could enjoy our freedom. While we respect all our veterans, this day in particular honors those who died for our country, and we will celebrate Mass at 9:00 during which we will pray for them. Since it is a work holiday for most, I hope that we will have a full church to honor their memory. We can never forget that this is not a holiday, but really a national Holy Day, when we pray for all our deceased service women and men. If you cannot join us for Mass, I ask that you at least pause at 9:00 Monday morning and take a minute to pray for them and with them. If we want God to bless America, these fallen heroes can be powerful intercessors for us, and we commend our country to their supplications before the throne of God.
Have a great week and Happy Easter, everyone. May God bless you and your loved ones!
